Yesterday, German Defence Minister Christine Lambrecht resigned, and today Chancellor Olaf Scholz appointed Boris Pistorius (62), the long-serving Minister of the Interior of Lower Saxony, as her successor. On Thursday, Pistorius will receive his certificate of appointment from the German President and take his oath of office in the German Bundestag.
“I am very pleased to have won Boris Pistorius, an outstanding politician from our country, as Defence Minister,” said Chancellor Scholz. “Pistorius is an extremely experienced politician who has administrative experience, has been dealing with security policy for years and, with his competence, assertiveness and big heart, is exactly the right person to lead the Bundeswehr through this change of era.”
Pistorius was Lord Mayor of Osnabrück for almost seven years before his appointment as State Minister of the Interior in 2013.
