A temporary quay is to be built on the coast. Servicemen and women from Naval Beach Group 1 are responsible for the construction of a large floating dock. This so-called roll-on roll-off unloading facility is part of the Joint Logistics Over-the-Shore (JLOTS) programme. JLOTS is under the direction of the Army’s 7th Transportation Brigade.
The roll-on roll-off unloading facility is 82 metres long and 22 metres wide. It will remain approximately three miles off the coast of the Gaza Strip and will enable cargo ships to unload aid supplies at sea. From there, they will be transported ashore. The Navy is using the so-called Trident Pier for this purpose. Ferries provide the connection between the unloading facility and the Trident Pier. Once it is operational, up to two million meals a day will reach the Gaza Strip via the pier. The army force mobilised about two days after US President Joe Biden announced a humanitarian mission in his State of the Union address earlier this month. Three ships will be used to transport the material: the USNS Roy P. Benevidez, the 2nd Lt. John P. Bobo and the 1st Lt. Baldomero Lopez. According to the US Department of Defence, the system will be operational in 60 days.
We will elaborate on the topic of safety in the Middle East with a panel of distinguished guests at the upcoming Berlin Security Conference (19th-20th November Hotel Andels, Berlin). More details and further information about the conference will be published soon. Early applicants for registration will receive a discount.
