The Norwegian government announced that it is procuring 54 Leopard 2 A7 for the Norwegian armed forces. The German Leopard thus prevailed against competition from South Korea, among others. First of these new battle tanks are to be delivered to Norway as early as 2026.
“The new tanks will increase combat power of our armed forces and thus Norway’s defence capability,” said General Eirik Kristoffersen, Commander of the Norwegian Armed Forces. “This is also a clear signal for further reinforcing our armed forces.”
The Chief of the Norwegian Army, Major General Lars Lervik, also praised the decision, saying: “This is one of the most important components in the ongoing modernisation of the Army. With this acquisition and the planned purchases of drones, air defence and long-range firepower, Norway will have a still small but at the same time one of the most modern armies in Europe in a few years.”
Manufacturer Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW) lists the most important innovations of the Leopard 2 A7+ as:
- Equipment features of the LEOPARD 2 A7+
- Passive all-round protection for the crew from threats such as IEDs, mines or anti-tank fire
- Crew compartment cooling systems in turret and chassis and additional performance-enhanced power generator for checkpoint missions
- Exterior telephone for dismounted forces
- Combined driver night vision (thermal imager/low light amplifier) for front and rear view
- Improved optronics (day/night) for reconnaissance over great distances
- Digitised and multifunctional operator concept
- Command and information system
- Programmable detonation ammunition
