With the admission of Finland and Sweden to NATO, the Baltic Sea is surrounded by allies. At the same time, however, Russian aggression gives the defence of the Baltic Sea a new, vital importance for Germany. Added to this is NATO’s New Force Model, which envisages regional responsibilities for certain areas.
